Assessing Worker Noise Exposure

The dBadge2 Noise Dosimeter mounts on the worker's shoulder, measuring the noise levels throughout the working day. It measures all the parameters needed by the occupational noise regulations throughout North America, Canada, Europe and the rest of the world. Everything is measured, so no risk of choosing the wrong parameters before starting the survey.

Octave Band Filters

This version of the dBadge2 noise dosimeter includes real-time octave band filters, splitting the spectrum into the nine standard bands to provide frequency analysis. This is useful if you need to carry out a more detailed assessment of hearing protectors using the octave band method, especially for very high noise levels or for tonal noise.

Audio Recording

The dBadge 2 PRO model has the ability to record the audio. This is useful for note taking before starting the measurements (employee name, machinery in use). It can also be set to record when the noise exceeds a preset sound level, enabling you to listen and identify the cause.

Managing the Results

You can take the readings directly from the display. Everything you need to satisfy the regulations is there. For more detail it is usually better to download to a computer using the software that is included. The dosimeter even provides you with the calculated noise exposure level (TWA for North America and some other regions, LEP,d or LEX,8hr for Europe).

Hearing Protection

The dBadge2 includes both "A" and "C" weighted Leq measurements. These can be used to assess the suitability of hearing protectors using the standard HML method. This method is adequate to satisfy the regulations. If you want more detail then choose the dBadge2 PRO and use the Octave Band method.

The Noise Dosimeter

The dBadge2 Noise Dosimeter mounts on the worker's shoulder and measures the noise exposure throughout the day or working shift. The dosimeter is powered by a rechargeable battery, giving up to 35 hours between charges. The built-in microphone is protected by a windshield. All measurements are stored to the internal memory for download to a computer or to be transferred to a mobile phone or tablet via Bluetooth.

Physical

Strong Case - Designed for the industrial environment, the dosimeter case is made from impact resistant and absorbing plastics. The microphone is protected by the integrated windshield.

Color Display - The color display clearly shows the state (running, paused, etc) of the dBadge 2. Despite the small size of the dosimeter the display is very easy to read.

Mounting the Noise Dosimeter - The dBadge2 mounts on the worker's clothing, attached with simple but strong clips. The clips are connected to the dBadge body by short, flexible straps, so they do not restrict the worker's movement.

Connectivity

Download to PC - The docking station and charger connects to the computer's USB port for download. Once connected, the dBadge2 in the left-hand docking port is available for download.

Integrity

Noise Measurement Integrity - As you are not with the noise dosimeter during the measurement process, you need ways of knowing whether the process was interfered with. Typical problems are:

  • Worker fiddling with the controls
  • Shouting at the microphone to see the sound level change
  • Taking it off and leaving it in a quiet place to prove there is no problem
  • Taking it off and leaving it in a noisy place to prove there is a problem

Locking Keypad and Display - The keypad and display can be locked to prevent it from being switched off or its settings changed. With the display off the urge to make noise to see the numbers change is removed!

Motion Sensor and Time History - To ensure that the dBadge2 hasn't been taken off in an attempt to influence the results, it presents you with a motion index expressed as a percentage the time. The Time History Noise Profile (graph of sound level over time) is also useful. You can usually tell at a glance whether the noise levels through the day were as expected. The Time History includes a number of noise parameters (LAeq, LCpeak, LCeq, etc) along with a motion indicator.

Noise Dosimetry Measurements

The dBadge noise dosimeter continuously measures the sound levels throughout the working day and calculates the worker's noise exposure.

USA Regulations

  • Lavg - "A" weighted average Slow sound level.
  • TWA - Time weighted average.
  • Dose % - The worker's noise exposure as a percentage.
  • LZpeak - "Z" weighted (or unweighted) Peak.

European Regulations

  • LAeq - "A" weighted average level.
  • LEP,d or LEX,8hr - The worker's noise exposure level.
  • LCpeak - "C" weighted Peak sound level.
  • LCeq - "C" weighted average level.

Other Parameters

  • LAFmax and LASmax - The maximum Fast and Slow sound level.
  • LAE - Sound Exposure Level
  • Pa²hr and Pa²s

Time History

The dBadge2 also stores the Sound Level, Leq, Peak and Max values every second along with the motion index. Although not needed by the regulations, we consider this essential to allow you to check the noisy times of the day and also to check against tampering.

Standards and Regulations

Occupational noise regulations around the world specify the standards that noise monitoring equipment should meet. It is essential that your sound level meter or noise dosimeter meets these standards.

The dBadge2 is designed to meet all the international regulations. For the most common regulations, such as those used in the North America and the EU, it has pre-programmed settings. To satisfy any other regulations parameters such as the Exchange Rate (3 or 5 dB), Threshold and Criterion Level can be changed. See the Specifications tab for more details of the settings available.

Multiple Meters In One!

The dBadge2 effectively has three meters built in. This is very useful for certain USA regulations such as OSHA, were you need to measure with different Threshold settings to make the Personal Exposure Limit (PEL) and Hearing Conservation (HC) measurements. Or you can measure to ISO and OSHA at the same time.

Record and Listen to the Audio

Audio Notes and Audio Recording are available on the PLUS and PRO versions of the dBadge2.

Audio Notes

The dBadge2 PRO can record up to 15 seconds of voice notes at the start of the measurement. You can record the employee's name, task and machinery details. Much more convenient than making notes by hand, and of course these notes stay with the measurement for audit purposes.

Audio Recording

The dosimeter can also record the audio during measurements, so you can listen and identify the noise source. This is particularly useful in identifying the cause of unexpectedly high noise levels.

The automatic trigger for recording is user configurable, based on the 1 second sound level, Peak or Max.

Audio recordings are stored in standard WAV files, which can be played using the optional Insight software or using the media player included with Windows.

Real-Time Octave Band Filters

Most noise at work regulations do not demand the use of octave band filters. However, they can be very useful in assessing the nature of the noise, the cause of high levels and in reducing the risk of hearing damage. We recommend octave band filters for areas with very high sound levels or tonal noise.

The PRO version of the dBadge2 includes real-time Octave Band Filters.

Octave Bands split the audible spectrum into bands to provide frequency analysis. For noise at work, these measurements are usually used to assess the suitability of hearing protectors. This method is more detailed and more accurate than the HML method (available from the standard dBadge 2) and more suited to tonal noise.

As octave band analysis requires more power it can be switched on or off as needed.

The dBadge2 will run for 35 hours on a full charge. With the real-time octave band filters running this is reduced to 15 hours, so still long enough for a working shift.

Using the dBadge2 Noise Dosimeter

The process for charging, monitoring and downloading measurements is the same for all versions of the dBadge2. The only difference is in the measurements obtained - the PRO version has audio recording, the PRO version has audio recording and octave band filters.

1. Charge the Battery

The dBadge has a rechargeable battery that will run for up to 35 hours. The charge time is less than 6 hours from flat to fully charged. A charge of just over an hour is sufficient for 8 hours of measurements. Place the dBadge on the charger/dock and plug in to a power outlet.

2. Calibrate

Most regulations state that you should check the dosimeter's calibration before and after making measurements. A suitable Calibrator is included in the DB2PROKx kits. Place the Calibrator firmly on to the microphone. When you switch the Calibrator on the dBadge should detect its presence and ask for confirmation.

3. Fix to Worker's Clothing

The dBadge2 noise dosimeter is mounted on the worker's shoulder, close to the ear, monitoring the sound levels where it matters. Use the clips provided (already attached to the dosimeter) to clip it on to the worker's overalls or clothing.

4. Start the Measurement

Timers are available to automatically start and stop measurements. The most common way is to start the measurement manually after fitting the noise dosimeter to the worker.

Using the dBadge's Keys - The dBadge2 has just two buttons. To start a measurement manually, press and hold both buttons for three seconds. To prevent tampering the dBadge2 can be set to automatically lock to keypad when running. If auto-lock is not on then you can lock the keypad manually.

Starting using Bluetooth - You can also use the Airwave application on a phone or tablet to start the measurement. Simply select the dBadge you want to work with and hold the Play icon for three seconds. This gives the opportunity to start a measurement without getting too up-close to the worker!

5. Stop the Measurement

It is recommended to leave the noise dosimeter on the worker for the full working shift. This way it can work out the noise exposure (TWA, LEP,d, LEX,8hr, etc.) for you. To stop the measurement, press and hold both keys for three seconds - similar to the starting process. Alternatively you can use the Airwave phone/tablet application to stop the measurement.

6 View the Results

All the measurements that you need to satisfy the occupational noise regulations are available on the dBadge2 display, and also on the Airwave phone based application. Parameters such as Lavg, TWA, Leq, Peak and LEP,d can be noted down manually if you prefer not to use software.

7. Downloading

Transferring the measurements to a computer gives the benefit of generating reports and long term storage. To download measurements from a dBadge2, connect the docking station to a computer and place the dosimeter in the left-hand position. You can use the Download Utility program (included with the DB2PROKx kits) to download the measurements to an Excel style spreadsheet. If you have the optional Insight software then this can also be used to download the measurements.

Software for the dBadge2

There are three programs available for the dBadge2 Noise Dosimeter:

  • dBadge 2 Download Utility (included)
  • Airwave Application for phones and tablets (included)
  • Insight Noise Data Management Software (option)

The dBadge2 Download Utility transfers the measurements from the dBadge into an Excel spreadsheet. If you want to produce your own reports then this is a quick way to do it.

The Airwave application runs on a phone or tablet and can be used to start and stop measurements. You can also view a summary of the measurement and send it by email.

The Insight software makes use of the full power of the dBadge2 dosimeter, downloading all the measurements, giving the option to link them with person, place or process, and producing reports.

dBadge2 Download Utility

The Download Utility software is available free of charge. It connects to a dBadge2 and downloads the measurements to an Excel spreadsheet file, from where you can carry our your own analysis and reporting. The file contains the measurement summary, along with the Time History Noise Profile, events, and a noise histogram.

Airwave Phone / Tablet Application

The Airwave Application for phones and tablets is available for download free of charge from the Google Play and the Apple App Store. It handles multiple dBadge2 noise dosimeters over a Bluetooth link. Using the Airwave app you can start, stop and pause measurements without interrupting the worker. You can view the current measurement state too - noise levels so far, battery level and memory capacity. A summary report can be emailed directly from the phone or tablet.

Insight Noise Data Management Software

The Insight software can be bought with the kit or at a later date. It runs in Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10, and deals with downloading the measurements, managing the data, linking measurements with people, processes, locations, etc. and generates reports.

Generating Reports

Reports can be created using either single or multiple measurements. You select the entity for which you want to generate a report - this can be a person, place or process and then select the option to Generate report...

The Report Wizard then leads you through the process, allowing you to select the sorting (site, location, process or person), making it very convenient to generate reports for all people, all processes, etc. You can then select a date range and even include/exclude selected measurements, and which fields you want included - date, time, duration, battery state, notes, and so on.

A personal header and footer can be added. All changes to the layout and content are saved so that you don't have to go through the same selections again.

Once generated, the report can be viewed on screen, printed or exported to other formats such as Excel (XLS) or PDF (ideal for emailing).

Intrinsically Safe Noise Dosimeter

The dBadge 2 noise dosimeter has ATEX and IECEx approval for use in hazardous and potentially explosive atmospheres. This I.S. design and approval make it ideal for use in the oil, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and mining industries.

Approvals

These approvals apply to the Intrinsically Safe version for the dBadge noise dosimeter. These are identified by the letters "IS" in the order code, as described in the Order Codes section on this page.

Noise Dosimeter Functions

With regard to noise measurement functionality, the Intrinsically Safe version of dBadge 2 is identical to the standard version. It measures all the same acoustic parameters, displays the same information and has the same data storage. It is completely compatible with the standard version, so you can have a mix of I.S. approved and standard versions, keeping the I.S. ones for use in the areas with a hazardous atmosphere.

Order Codes

The order codes for the Intrinsically Safe version of the dBadge all contain the letters "IS". They are shown in the ordering and pricing boxes at the top and bottom of this page.

The kit codes are DB2ISKx, where x indicates the number of intrinsically safe dosimeters that are included.

Limitations of Intrinsic Safety Approval

Only the noise dosimeter and its direct attachments (mounting devices) are approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

None of the additional items such Charger or Calibrator are approved, so all tasks such as charging and calibrating the dBadge should be done outside the hazardous area.

Technical Specifications

For occupational noise and hearing protection applications, it is essential that the dosimeter you use meets the correct standards. The dosimeter standards are based on the sound level meter standards ANSI S1.4 and IEC61672, but are specific to this particular application. The relevant standards are:

  • IEC 61252 Personal Sound Exposure Meters

The dBadge2 meets and exceeds these standards. It is suitable for occupational noise assessments in line with the USA and Canadian regulations, European regulations, UK HSE guidelines, Australian, New Zealand and any other regulations we are aware of.
